Knowing is the first step to doing! So know your numbers, the number of your employees with costly risk factors, the number looking to change their lifestyle, how many of your employees are healthy and how close is your organization to the profile of a healthy company? And of course what does the” healthiness” or “unhealthiness” of your employees cost you?
These are some of the questions you can answer with a good Health Risk Assessment .And once you get the answers you can plan your targeted attack.
Yet many employers simply do not know .And not only employers, but employees are also unaware of their health risks. And since many chronic conditions are typically without any overt physical markers, their impact is either not known or is underestimated.
A recent survey (link to 2016 Sanofi survey) reported a disconnect between what the employers thought was the number of employees with a chronic condition (32%) and the actual percentage (59%). Moreover, the incidence of chronic conditions is increasing, which together with the aging workforce and increasingly unhealthy lifestyles create a tsunami of excess costs that threaten business success.
And from the employee perspective, the story is not better. A recent study found that 40% of employees were unaware of their high blood pressure or high cholesterol and these were the individuals who were more likely to eat fast foods and less vegetables and fruit and to be more sedentary.
So, employers and employees…make sure you know Your Numbers!
